Many articles say consult your doctor before starting winter swimming. But I feel like many doctors do not give you good results without you providing them target questions or researched problems they can use to make conclusions. Here's a checklist of sorts that I have compiled to help with discussion...
Most Critical Risk Factors to Screen:
- Cardiac health (cold shock response causes rapid heart rate and breathing changes)
- Blood pressure control
- Any condition affecting your ability to regulate body temperature
Your Medical History to Share:
- Cardiovascular conditions (high blood pressure, heart disease, arrhythmia)
- Respiratory issues (asthma, chronic bronchitis)
- Raynaud's disease or circulation problems
- Diabetes or thyroid conditions
- Any history of cold urticaria (cold-induced hives) or cold-related injuries
- Current medications that might affect cold response
- Previous experience with cold water exposure
Questions to Ask Your Doctor:
- Are there any medical reasons I shouldn't do cold water swimming?
- Should I have any specific tests done first (like an ECG or cardiovascular assessment)?
- What warning signs should make me stop immediately?
- Are there specific risks given my age and health status?
- How gradually should I acclimate to cold water?
- Should I avoid swimming if I have a cold or feel unwell?
- Are there any medications I take that increase risks in cold water?
